Nuremberg 1

We got to Nuremberg not really knowing what to expect.  Once we got into the town (every single road in Germany seems to be under repair), we found an amazingly beautiful walled city.  One reason it's difficult to move around is the fact that there are only perhaps five or six entry points into the city center.  Within the walls, most of the city is pedestrian, with cobbled streets and a lot of sidewalk life.  Flowing east-to-west through the city is the Pegnitz river, and the town slopes down reasonably steeply to this on both sides.  The Schloss at the North end of the city is impressive, you can see why it was built there.  Apparently it was so well fortified that few bothered to try to take it, which was one of the reasons that this was a major city in the Holy Roman Empire.  The Swedes made an attempt in the 30 years war and failed.

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg is, I believe, the largest of its kind in Germany, and is really fantastic.  They had an exhibit on the Renaissance changes launched by Luther, Columbus and Copernicus that was really fantastic.

We ate well in Nuremberg.  The country's awash with gelato, and Nuremberg seems to have a disproportionate number of these.  One popular thing is spaghetti eis, which is basically an ice cream sundae but the ice cream is put through something akin to the fuzzy pumper barber shop.  We have had a couple of these and have decided that's enough, but I might have to get another just to get a photo.
View of the Pegnitz river from a bridge.  I had a nice yoga session close to here, tucked under a tree with perplexed but polite Germans occasionally passing.
