Palomar Graduation - Gracias por todo

Friday, May 20

Well, I realize that this is supposed to be the "Southern Swing" blog, and indeed it is.  It's south, just about about 2100 miles west of Dixie.

The trip's starting in Southern California (see, that counts!) for Maddy's graduation from Palomar Community College in San Marcos.  It was the fitting end to an extremely productive and affirming time for her there.  I continue to be blown away by California's educational system.  Say what you will about the Golden State, they get education done on a shoe string, they do it really well, and make it accessible.  Maddy did some very interesting pieces of scholarly work there.  Amongst the 2000 graduates, there was the complete spectrum in every way.  Lots of people for lots of reasons.  Students from 17 to 75 years old got their degrees.  From members of the military, to working parents, to people who wanted a second chance after a bad high school experience, to young women who just needed a little more time before heading off for a bachelor's degree.  All were there.  There's a feeling that, no matter what has happened to you in the past, anything's possible now and it's all good.  An optimism that isn't unique to California but that I certainly associate with California in a way that's a little different from other places.  I'm very proud of her, and grateful to PCC.

The happy graduate.
The setting.  Maddy's up there somewhere.
